First Whistle of 2017 Blows in Marmaris: Season Opening Regatta
Marmaris Marina Hosts the Traditional New Year's Sailing Race to Kick Off Turkey's 2017 Yachting Season
We were in Marmaris on January 7-8 for the ERGO-MIYC 2017 Winter Trophy 1st Leg Yacht Races, sponsored by ERGO Insurance and organized by MIYC.

During the race held on days when all of Turkey was frozen solid, the cold made itself felt on the Marmaris race course as well.

On Friday evening, to put it aptly, the heavens opened up, the sea went wild, and Poseidon pulled out all the stops.

On Saturday morning, January 7, in calm weather, the teams first gathered at the yacht club for the briefing.

The race committee announced that they planned 3 races for the 1st Leg, and that the first two would be sailed today.

When the 23 registered boats took to the racecourse, the wind was coming gently and coyly from the west and occasionally from the north, unlike the day before when it had shown its strength.

On Saturday, when the rain was also intermittently effective as if to say "I'm not done yet," 2 races were sailed as planned inside the bay.

In the evening, longing was satisfied with the traditional barbecue party at MIYC facilities. At the party where the anchovy-beer duo was dominant, the cold was saying "Don't forget me, I'm here".

When heading out to the race course on Sunday, conditions were no different from the day before. The wind gave a bit more confidence to the Race Committee, announcing that the geographic course would take place.

At the start, the light breeze gradually strengthened over time, causing the long geographic course to be sailed at high speed.

As the fleet completed the race outside the bay in strong winds and entered the bay to finish, the wind was gradually losing its strength.
